DHWG Meet-Up: I-Book on Civil Rights w/Lauren Pearlman

November 15, 2016 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Digital Humanities Working Group (DHWG) Meet-Up:

iBook on Civil Rights

Lauren Pearlman (Department of History)

Tuesday, 15 November 2016, 2:00 – 3:00 pm, Smathers Conference Room (First Floor)

In this DHWG meet-up, we will discuss the writing, making, and publishing of a digital media primary source reader as well as its pedagogical value. This reader, an iBook entitled The West Point Guide to the Civil Rights Movement, was the foundation for a lesson and writing assignment for the freshman U.S. history survey at West Point, used by 1000 students per year . Through user-led interactions with the iBook, students learned the complex history of the civil rights movement and evaluated different types of primary sources for the purpose of historical analysis. In addition to questions about content and teaching, we will also ask whether or not such digital projects count as “public” scholarship.

The UF Digital Humanities Working Group (DHWG) is a group of academic and library faculty, staff, and graduate students who meet monthly to discuss current topics at the intersection of digital technologies and the humanities and support each other in project development. The 2016-17 meet-ups will explore the relationship between the “public” and the digital. These informal gatherings are open to anyone at any level of interest or expertise. Come join us for sharing and discussion!

For more information on the Digital Humanities at UF and to join the DHWG, see the DHWG webpage.
