Digital Humanities Working Group (DHWG) Meet-Up:

Digital Worlds Institute

Friday, 22 January 2016, 4:00-5:00 pm, REVE

The UF Digital Worlds Institute (DW) celebrates its 15th anniversary this month. Over the last decade and a half, it has been an integral part of the UF academic community, providing a dynamic partnership between the College of the Arts and the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering. DW promotes interdisciplinary research in digital media, offering a BA and an MA degree in Digital Arts and Sciences, advanced Research, Education and Visualization Environment (REVE) facilities, as well as digital production services, among others.  In this DHWG meet-up, James Oliverio, the institute director, will introduce us to the illustrious history of DW and lead us on a tour of the production studios in the institute. The meet-up will also include a presentation by Prof. Eleni Bozia on her current Spring 2016 class at DW.

Event highlights include:

  1. Welcome and Introduction to Digital Worlds by James Oliverio, the institute director
  2. Short film (15 min.) on the history of DW
  3. Introduction/presentation by Prof. Eleni Bozia, who is teaching a class at DW on “Digital Tools in Arts and Humanities”
  4. Tour of Digital Worlds production studios
  5. There will be an informal reception after the meet-up and a screening of the short animated movie “The French in Florida”, created by DW and the UF Library to honor the largely unknown story of Florida’s 16th century French pioneers. Also, there will be an opportunity to go “Exploring Ancient Egypt” in the Polymodal Immersive Classroom Theatre (PICT).

The address to the REVE facility and a map of the area are below. Precise directions to the REVE from mulitiple locations, including the UF campus, can be found here.

Discussion Questions

  1.  How can humanists expand accessibility and interest in traditional humanities topics by utilizing digital media like video games?

The UF Digital Humanities Working Group (DHWG) is a group of academic and library faculty, staff, and graduate students who meet monthly to discuss current topics at the intersection of digital technologies and the humanities and support each other in project development. The 2015-16 meet-ups will explore new programs, projects, and resources in the digital humanities at UF. These informal gatherings are open to anyone at any level of interest or expertise. Come join us for sharing and discussion!
