DHWG Meet-Up: From Historical GIS to Crowdsourcing and Collective Memory: (Contesting) Urban History in the Digital Age w/Michelle Campos
October 25, 2016 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Digital Humanities Working Group (DHWG) Meet-Up:
From Historical GIS to Crowdsourcing and Collective Memory
Tuesday, 25 october 2016, 2:00 – 3:00 pm, Library West 212 (Scott Nygren Studio)
This meet-up aims to discuss how urban history and collective memory can provide a bridge to link academic research with the broader public, both as consumers and as co-producers. In my opening remarks, I will discuss how my current research project on Ottoman Jerusalem is moving beyond its more scholarly framework of reliance on archival documentation, to oral history, collaboration with NGOs and student groups, and internet crowdsourcing for family history. After discussing some early crowdsourcing precedents in my own field, I will discuss the opportunities and challenges of inviting public participation in the research, documentation, and interpretive process.
