DHWG Meet-Up: Teaching Reason through Technology w/Greg Ray
March 21, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Teaching Reason through Technology
Dr. Greg Ray (Department of Philosophy)
March 21 @ 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm
An informed and discerning citizenry responsive to reasoned argument is essential for the proper functioning of a democracy. Yet, we know (and studies broadly corroborate) that reasoning skills, even among the college educated, remain underdeveloped. However, developments in computer technology have provided new tools and strategies for teaching critical thinking skills.
In this DHWG Meet-Up, we will discuss the benefits and challenges of teaching fundamental, practical reasoning skills with technological tools. This discussion will be based on a course currently being taught in the Philosophy department — a pilot course called “Reasoning” that students are saying absolutely everybody should take.
The UF Digital Humanities Working Group (DHWG) is a group of academic and library faculty, staff, and graduate students who meet monthly to discuss current topics at the intersection of digital technologies and the humanities and support each other in project development. The 2016-17 meet-ups will explore the relationship between the “public” and the digital. These informal gatherings are open to anyone at any level of interest or expertise. Come join us for sharing and discussion!
For more information on the Digital Humanities at UF and to join the DHWG, see the DHWG webpage.
