Digital Humanities Working Group (DHWG) Meet-Up:

The Promise and Peril of Digital Pedagogy: Two Case Studies

Thursday, 14 April 2016, 2:00 – 3:00 pm, Library West 212 (Scott Nygren Studio)

In this DHWG Meet-Up, Dr. Sean Trainor will discuss the challenges and rewards of implementing two digital pedagogy projects. The first of these, entitled the Timeline of American Cultural History, is an ongoing project at Santa Fe College that asks humanities students to contribute brief entries on landmark moments in American cultural history to a digital timeline. The second project is entitled Hard Work in Happy Valley. The capstone of an American labor history course, Hard Work asked students to produce documentaries and podcasts about workers in the Penn State University community and analyze these workers’ experiences through the lens of the semester’s readings. While attendees are encouraged to visit the websites of both projects prior to the event, the workshop will primarily focus on the pedagogical, organizational, institutional, and cultural challenges of implementing DH projects in the classroom.

Dr. Sean Trainor is an adjunct faculty member in history and humanities at the University of Florida, Santa Fe College, and Penn State University’s World Campus.

Discussion Questions

  1.  What are the most effective strategies for implementing digital history projects in the classroom?

The UF Digital Humanities Working Group (DHWG) is a group of academic and library faculty, staff, and graduate students who meet monthly to discuss current topics at the intersection of digital technologies and the humanities and support each other in project development. The 2015-16 meet-ups will explore new programs, projects, and resources in the digital humanities at UF. These informal gatherings are open to anyone at any level of interest or expertise. Come join us for sharing and discussion!

For more information on the Digital Humanities at UF and to join the DHWG, see the DHWG webpage.
