Digital Humanities Working Group (DHWG) Meet-Up:

TRACE Innovation Initiative

Tuesday, 8 March 2016, 1:00-2:00 pm, Library West 212 (Scott Nygren Studio)

Practitioners of the humanities are not necessarily known for technological mastery. In many ways, scholars and students who want to use computational methods, apps, or other technologies are forced to adapt their research questions and methodology to whatever is available. However, the rise of the digital humanities shows that it is possible for humanists to design these technologies to better suit their research agendas. In this DHWG Meet-Up, Dr. Sid Dobrin will introduce the TRACE Innovation Initiative and its component parts. As a forum of research, TRACE embraces building and making as crucial to the work of the humanities by creating open-source software initiatives like MassMine and socially engaged public writing projects such as Augmented Reality Criticisms, which allow researchers to investigate the ethical and material impacts of media on society.

Discussion Questions

  1.  How can building and making affect reserach agendas in the humanities?

The UF Digital Humanities Working Group (DHWG) is a group of academic and library faculty, staff, and graduate students who meet monthly to discuss current topics at the intersection of digital technologies and the humanities and support each other in project development. The 2015-16 meet-ups will explore new programs, projects, and resources in the digital humanities at UF. These informal gatherings are open to anyone at any level of interest or expertise. Come join us for sharing and discussion!

For more information on the Digital Humanities at UF and to join the DHWG, see the DHWG webpage.
