DHWG Meet-Up: Public History & Digital Archives w/Paula de la Cruz-Fernández

October 18, 2016 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Digital Humanities Working Group (DHWG) Meet-Up:

Municipal Archives and Their Users

Tuesday, 18 October 2016, 2:00 – 3:00 pm, Library West 212 (Scott Nygren Studio)

Do municipal archives serve the public good? Based on the image we have of a lonely researcher hidden away in dusty stacks, it is not obvious that the answer is yes. Archival programs for municipal records were rare until the turn of the twentieth century. The digital age as its own perils, but its promise in terms of expanding the visibility of research and accessibility of material should be kept in mind. In this meet-up, we will discuss digitization initiatives at municipal archives including my own experience as a historian and archivist for the city of Miami Beach. In other words, how has archiving and digitization been done in municipal archives? We will also tackle the question of audience. Who are these archives for? Are they truly public?

The UF Digital Humanities Working Group (DHWG) is a group of academic and library faculty, staff, and graduate students who meet monthly to discuss current topics at the intersection of digital technologies and the humanities and support each other in project development. The 2015-16 meet-ups will explore new programs, projects, and resources in the digital humanities at UF. These informal gatherings are open to anyone at any level of interest or expertise. Come join us for sharing and discussion!
