DHWG Meet-Up: The Digitization of Public Scholarship Ibram Kendi (Department of History)
January 17, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Digital Humanities Working Group (DHWG) Meet-Up:
The Digitization of Public Scholarship
Ibram Kendi (Department of History)
Tuesday, 17 January 2017, 2:00 – 3:00 pm, Library West 212 (Scott Nygren Studio)
The beginning phrase of Tolber’s 1st law of geography that “everything is related to everything else” is even more salient in the wake of the Digital Revolution. Networks of communication and knowledge exchange connect the classroom to the wider world beyond the university. For scholars, these ever expanding circles of communication pose unique challenges: they connect us to a wider and more diverse audience, but they also tend muddy the “factual” waters.
In this meet-up, we will discuss how scholars, including myself, have participated in the digitization of public scholarship via blogs, online op-eds, and social media engagement. And we will also pose a pressing question: what are the advantages and disadvantages of using digital formats to circulate curated, scholarly knowledge?
The UF Digital Humanities Working Group (DHWG) is a group of academic and library faculty, staff, and graduate students who meet monthly to discuss current topics at the intersection of digital technologies and the humanities and support each other in project development. The 2016-17 meet-ups will explore the relationship between the “public” and the digital. These informal gatherings are open to anyone at any level of interest or expertise. Come join us for sharing and discussion!
